Glenna Collett Vare, born in New Haven (1903-1989), was the greatest female golfer of her day, dominating American women's golf in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Glenna was a sports enthusiast at an early age and her exceptional golfing skills earned her the nickname, “The First Lady of Golf.”

Raised in Providence, Rhode Island, Glenna took up golf in 1917 and won her first-round match in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Golf Championship in 1919. Two years later, at 18, she had the Championship’s lowest qualifying score. Vare went on to win six U.S. Amateur Championships, two Canadian Ladies Opens and the French Ladies Open. In 1975, Glenna was inducted into the first class of the World Golf Hall of Fame; she is also in the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame and the Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame.
