“Connecticut Women: Across the Curriculum, Throughout the Year” was sent, free of charge, to 1,000 schools throughout Connecticut in early 2004. This project was made possible through a generous grant from Lincoln Financial Group Foundation.
A collaborative project that required the expertise of a wide range of professionals, from school teachers to graphic designers, the curriculum materials include a timeline poster of both state and national women's achievements and a deck of inductee trading cards. The centerpiece of the project is the Teacher's Guide, a resource packet designed to help teachers incorporate women's history into their curriculum.
The resource binder features a letter of endorsement from Daniel W. Gregg, Social Studies Consultant for the State of Connecticut Department of Education. The lessons are designed for students in the fourth through eighth grades. Primary sources pertaining to Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame inductees constitute the subject material and activity plans.
A photo and passage from Emily Dunning Barringer's book, Bowery to Bellevue, for example, are used to highlight the concerns and fears she experienced as the first female ambulance surgeon. Excerpts from other inductee publications are also used throughout the curriculum, with a lesson plan designed around each one. Theodate Pope Riddle's blueprints for Avon Old Farms are included as well as a speech given by Donna Lopiano in reference to the work she did to secure Title IX of the Education Amendments. We also created a selected bibliography of books by and about Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame Inductees to generate further interest in their stories, an online resource guide for teachers who require more material, and a glossary.
Excerpts of subject material and activity plans contained in our Teacher's Guide are available on our website. For further access to each one, please
