Dotha Bushnell Hillyer - Horace Bushnell Memorial Hall

Dotha Bushnell Hillyer (1843-1932)

Founder and benefactor of the Horace Bushnell Memorial Hall (Inducted 2003)

Horace Bushnell Memorial Hall was built by Dotha Bushnell Hillyer and dedicated in 1930. Hillyer was a remarkable reformer and community builder. She sought to carry on her father’s legacy of service and dedicated this major project to him. With her husband, philanthropist Appleton Robbins Hillyer, she developed the plans, dedicated the money she invested and lived to see the performing arts center. “The Bushnell” continues to thrive as a theater. The Hillyers were also responsible for funding the Science Museum and the original YMCA, now part of the University of Hartford. The Horace Bushnell Memorial Hall is located at 166 Capitol Avenue in Hartford.
